What Causes Ovarian Cyst

Recently I was diagnosed with an ovarian cyst... unfortunately she didn't tell me how many there were or how severe my case was. I still have to go see a gyno about it. Anyways, I have been having stomach cramps--- very much unlike the cramps I had because of my cysts. They started today. They are higher up in my stomach and accompanied by some nausea. I have also had some underarm pain, not sure if that's related or not. I have been off birth control since October. My problem now is that its too early for a pregnancy test. I have until the 24th for my period to come. Could these symptoms be associated with pregnancy or does it sound like something else.
