What Causes Pain And Swelling In The Knees?

I have been having knee pain for 2 days now in my right knee. Now both knees have become slightly swollen and spongy to the touch. I feel generally unwell like the onset of a cold/flu. My pain has now become an ache throughout my leg and calf. I m concerned as to what this could be?
