What Causes Pain And Swelling In Throat?

I had a tube put in my right ear. While the doctor performed the procedure he removed an extra membrane behind the ear drum that he cut out. He had no explanation for why it was there and had never seen anything like it before. I am still getting ear pain but not to the extent it was. What could be causing the pain and causing throat gland to get swollen feeling like I have congestion in my throat?
