What Causes Pain And Swelling In Throat?

I went to see a doctor yesterday and I was told I have a throat virus, so i have been taking regular Paracetemol and Ibruprofen, it hasn't seem to help much. Last night my neck got quite swollen and was becoming quite painful, I haven't been able to sleep much as my throat is hurting and i find it hard to eat and drink. I have woken up this morning and it is still swollen and i would say bigger than last night. I have had a small lump of fluid on my neck since i was a small child from an illness and it has not been noticeable for years but now it is really quite visible and painful too
