What Causes Pain And Swelling In Toe Radiating To Shin?

Last night in the middle of the night, my big toe on my left foot raised straight up and I could not put my foot on the floor without intense pain. The nerve between my big toe and my next toe hurt all the way up my shin and into my neck and shoulder. What on earth could have caused this? Should I be concerned I may be at risk for a stroke?
