What Causes Pain Behind Ear?

i am having severe pain behind my left ear just below the base of the skull. i am recovering from pneumonia and am still coughing, which seems to make the pain worse. it hurts to the touch as well. should i be concerned or does it sound like a pulled muscle of some sort?
