What Causes Pain Behind Knees?

Hi Doctor, yesterday while out walking, a terrible pain began behind my left knee, the two strides of felt tough muscle/tendon at which the inner tendon became very painful has become a somewhat consern.....Why is this?....and yes it is the same leg at which I have a rehabilitating past ankle injury....Thank you
