What Causes Pain In Ear After Cleaning?

Hi, I've cleaned my left ear just now with a needle (using the needle's head, not the sharp end) then it came out with a huge(about 1 inch) red ear wax. After that i feel pain on that ear. But i'm really sure that the pain is not causing by the needle because i'm not touch the soft tissue, only on the middle of the hole.
So my question is, is it important for the ear wax to stay there and what's the cause of the pain actually? And do I need to seek for treatment?
