What Causes Pain In Head Radiating Towards Neck And Shoulder?

Yesterday had a pain develop on the left upper side of my head running down my neck into my shoulder.Had to pull over and aggressively massage my shoulder until pain was bearable .Now I feel bruised but no bruise visible, tender to the touch,What happened? Right after lunch.
