What Causes Pain In Lower Chest From Severe Coughing?

I went to the doctor today with pain in my lower rib cage area after orolonged coughing. He said it was potential diaphragm strain. He didn t do X-rays. It hurts severely. How can I know for sure if it is diaphragm strain and how long does that take to heal?
