What Causes Pain In The Areola Area Of My Breast On Touching?

I am having pain in the areola area of my left breast. I seems localized - it doesn't hurt all the time but I definitely know when my arm brushes that area or if I bump it. There seems to be a little swelling but no actual lump per say. I am a 47 year old female - any thoughts on this - should I be concerned?
