What Causes Pain In The Nipple?

For about the last month my left nipple has felt pain when the shower water would hit it. Lately, it just hurts/burns/stings all day long, but pretty much locally on the nipple. I don't have any discoloration that I can see, and the aerola may be slighthly swollen. I am a 46.5 year old female, definitely not pregnant.
