What Causes Pain In The Top Of Leg?

I have started experiencing stappy pains in the middle of the top half of my leg. The pain is very sharp and stappy pains. They started about three weeks ago, I don't have them all the time. About once a week I get them now. Do u think this is severe, or just normal muscle pain?
