What Causes Pain In Tip Of The Ear?

My 17 year old son has red ear tips. This causes him pain. He puts water and ice on it to help cool it down. He has had this condition for years however it seems to be getting worse. No one seems to know what it is or who he should see for help. The side of his face, cheeks also get red when this occurs
