What Causes Pain While Pulling Out Tampon?

I just used a tampon for the first time. I am 24. I've always been afraid to. But, anyways, I put it in and got it in but I pulled it out a few minutes afterward. It hurt. Why did it hurt to take out? Is it me or what? If it's me I will not ever use a tampon again.
