What Causes Painful Air Bubble In Rectum With Family History Of Colon Cancer?

My boyfriend was up in middle of night last night from what he described as a painful air bubble in his rectum. He said he suffered from this pain regularly years ago, and that last nights episode was the first that he's had in years. His mother passed away a few years ago from colon cancer. I'm concerned and wondering if he should go get checked?
