What Causes Painful Bump In Neck And Sore Throat?

I have had a bump on my neck like a little swollen spot in the middle of my throat since christmas eve, I keep getting bad soar throats, then the sore throat goes away but the bump stays now i'm getting another sore throat and the whole time the swollen spot is pretty painful. My family Doctor said he has no idea on what it could be and why its stayed for this long.
