What Causes Painful Irregular Periods?

Hi I am 20 years old and I sometimes get irregular periods and sometimes very painful. My mother was the same way as a child and she said that in order to get pregnant with me she had to take pills that give her hormones and i was wondering if that is Genetic and if i have to do the same.
