What Causes Painful Lump Above Kneecap?

I have a painful lump above my right knee cap to the right side of the knee cap. it is particularly (extremely) painful when I kneel or squat. The lump developed after going on a long walk. I had previously been relatively inactive for about 6 months due to a complicated pregnancy.
