What Causes Painful Prominent Vein On The Palm?

I have what appears to a bulging vein on the palm of my hand. It is bluish in color and painful to the touch. It came on suddenly and I quickly took a baby aspirin in case it was a blood clot. The pain has subsided but the area is still tender. What do you this is and what do you think may have caused it?
