What Causes Painful Ribs Every Time While Breathing?

My ribs have a sharp pain every time I breathe. Two days ago I was in a pool with my brother and I told him to squeeze the area were my ribs were with his legs hard as he could and he did when it started hurting I told him to stop. But as the days past it started hurting as I breathed. Why?
