What Causes Painful Sores Between Toes?

Hello Doctor My husband and I live in Zambia, its the rainy season and his car got stuck in the mud. he got out to push the car but his shoes ended up full of water. he then took the shoes off and continued pushing the car. After 3 days he has developed very bad sores between his toes and its quite raw and painful. I am not sure whether it could be athletes foot or something more as his feet and toes are quite swollen as well.
