What Causes Painful Urination Along With Dark Brown Urine?

Went to hospital I have severe pain when urinating which is hard to get urine to come out and it is dark brown like tea color I left hospital before getting diagnosis . Hospital called and confirmed I have a uti but are insisting on me coming back in because they need to see me . They won t tell me why? What could it be?
