What Causes Patch Of Dead Skin On Hands And Fingers?

The skin on my hands and fingers acts like it's molting. It starts with what appears to be a small patch of dead skin. When I peel that off it just starts to come off in huge chunks. Below the skin there appears to be a dead layer of skin causing the initial patch of dead skin. I've had this for years and sometimes seems seasonal.
