What Causes Patchy Beard?

hello sir .... thanking u all for this facility .... i have seen so many men having sparse beard on their faces rather having full beard.... is there any hormonal problem or lack of proteins...
will u please clarify my doubt ... my uncle has also sparse beard ... he daily depressed about that matter... please help...
