What Causes Peeling Of Skin In The Toe?

my second toe is peeling and has peeled so much it has become painful to walk on it. Husband says it looks like atheletes foot but it is just the end on the one toe. no smell or discharge just raw from peeling. my son had some ringworm creme I put a bit on it one day and it did get a bit better but it is still gross.
