What Causes Persistent Fever In A Child?

I gave my son paracetamol 5 hours ago to reduce the temperature but all in vain. Would it be harmful if I inserted para desk now since it contains Cetamol? I also took him to see a pediatrician and was told he had a bacterial infection. He has been on treatment for seven days since then but why isn t he getting better? What could be the problem?
