What Causes Persistent Headache?

My son is almost 14 years old. He has recently been having sudden onset of severe headaches. Tonight he had a sudden onset severe headache rated 8 out of 10. It is located above his right eye with no radiation. No neurological deficits, no dizziness and no blurred vision. It has not gone away with rest and Ibuprofen. How serious is this?
