What Causes Persistent Pain Along The Side Of Rib Cage?

I have persistent pain along the right side of my rib cage, my doctor keeps saying this is related to my back problems but after a 2 years of constant pain its still not resolved..I have been off of work for almost a year and nothing is being done except for physio therapy and it is not helping, any ideas of what could be causing this.
