What Causes Persistent Pain In Left Side Of Back?

For about 8 days, I have been experiencing a sharp pain on the left side of my back which seems to be localized under the shoulder blade area. I have tries massages, muscle relaxers, anti-imflammatory meds. What could be the problem with consistent pain in this area. I do not think it is a muscle strain.
