What Causes Popping Sound In The Ears?

I have had a popping noise in my ears when i swallow or blow my nose. also once my sinuses clear i can smell metal, or what i can only describe as a "sick" smell. I have no discomfort or pain. I also recently had a root canal and have thought that could be a factor. I also believe my sense of smell is not as strong as usual.
