What Causes Prolonged Bleeding After A Vaginal Swab?

My doc did a vaginal swab & said I had a bacterial infection and also found blood / mucus indicating the start of my period. Since she did the swab, I have been bleeding for nearly 3 weeks straight. This has never happened with a period. What might be the cause for bleeding?
