What Causes Prolonged Bleeding While Not On Contraceptive Pills?

on the 18th i was spotting i guess i figured it was my period because there was blood but it was lighter than usual. so i thought after the five days it would end but it didnt. there was still blood and i dont know what the problem is. :( im not on any birth control. never have been
