What Causes Prolonged Bleeding With Irregular Periods?

My period is irregular and has been since it started at 12. I am now 22. I am now ttc and am having difficulty. I had abnormal bleeding for 40 days starting dec 17. The only thing that has stopped the bleeding waas fisrt a round of provera, and now I have been given a bc pill. Please help!
