What Causes Prolonged Chest Pain?

I have had slight chest pains for the last two years on both the left and right side of my chest . One time it was so consistent that I went into panic headed to the doctor and they checked my vitals in the emergency but it was negative no sign of a heart attack but I ocasionailly still get them off and on what could it be?
