What Causes Prolonged Menstrual Bleeding While On Birth Control?

i have been on the same birth control for 6 years. Since on birth control I have had regular periods. About 3 months ago I started having a mid cycle period. this month it has lasted about 9 days and I am still on my period. I always still have my period at the regular time. I am concerned there is something wrong.
