What Causes Prolonged Menstrual Bleeding?

im working abroad for a year apart from my wife, and my wife in my country just taking care of our 2 yrs old son, has recently had 17 days nonstop menstrual bleeding? may i know the reason behind? she has no more thyroid. her obgyne said, it might be due to the hormonal imbalance.
