What Causes Prominent Vein In Penis During Masturbation?

For the past few months I've hard a hard vein on my penis that appears sometimes during masturbation.
I can't feel it when flaccid, nor is there any discomfort.
It goes away as soon as I loose an erection and it's size changes. Sometimes it's longer than others when it appears.
