What Causes Purple Spot Behind Knee?

I am a 53 year old woman who just returned from a trip to China. My family just noticed a deep purple spot behind my left knee that is about the size of a fist. It does not really hurt and I did not know it was there. It looks somewhat like a bruise but not like any bruise I have ever seen. Is it something I should be concerned about? Thank you for your help
