What Causes Purplish Bump On The Vaginal Lip?

My daughter who is 23 has developed a red to purplish bump the size of a pea on the lip of her vagina. She says it is quite painful when wiping. Do you know what this may be? She is feeling a little scared at the moment not to mention embarassed. Thank you
