What Causes Pus Leakage From Navel Along With Ingrown Hair?

The other day I noticed a strong odor I couldn t figure out where it was coming from but then I noticed I had a bunch of brown puss leaking out my belly button and I started to clean it with peroxide and q tips.. I then realized bunch of hair grown inside my belly button so I used tweezers and plucked them out as much as I could... What is this called why do I have this and how do I prevent it from happening again. Thank you
