What Causes Pus Like Coating In Back Of Throat?

My 6 year old son has what looks like puss in the back of his throat. Not tonsils. You can only see it if he sticks out his tounge. I have an appt with his Pediatrition in the morning but I m worried about what it might be. It s about the size of my finger nail
