What Causes Quarter-sized Red Welts On The Right Side Of Body?

My 10 year old son developed quarter-sized red welts on the right side of his body 2 days ago. They follow a line from his arm pit to the back of his knee. The welts look like mosquito bites ad have not developed the chickenpock like bubles. This moring he woke with a fever and stomach pain.
