What Causes Random Sensation Of Abnormal Smell And Taste?

I had thyroid surgery about a year ago and right after surgery there was a certain smell and taste that i can t explain. I went away soon after my post op but every once in a while i get that same sense of smell and taste. What does that mean and why?
