What Causes Rashes Starting From My Leg Towards Stomach?

my son has a rash that started on his leg and worked it's way to his stomach, then his arm then his other leg. the doctor at the hospital said it was a "nonspecific rash" and to use cortizone. i'm using it but how long should it take before it goes away? and is it just a nonspecific rash?
