What Causes Recurring Blister On The Toe?

hi my husband dropped a very heavy plank of wood on his toe its now black and looks nasty today it does not seem as black as it was but the last 2 days he keeps getting a nasty blister on his toe he has popped the blister twice and it just keps coming back
