What Causes Recurring Heartburn?

Six days ago I developed very sudden heartburn. It has been continuously present since. I have been treating with OTC acid controller for five days. After about 10-11 hours the dose wears off and the pain returns. I generally/ historically do not suffer from heartburn or any issues with my stomach. Will this pass on its own, or should I be concerned?
