What Causes Recurring Involuntary Movement Of Toes?

From time to time, I get this weird feeling in my right foot which makes the toe next to my pinky toe takes a life it's own and I can't move it. It feels weird and I don't have control over it. I try and spread all of my toes to keep the toe from contorting (bending downward or on top of my 3rd toe) but can't. I usually massage my foot and it stops. It has been happening more frequently.
