What Causes Recurring Painful Boil On The Finger?

I have had a recurring painful boil on my left finger for the last year or so a half inch from my fingernail. it is pink around the boil and after a few days a hole forms in the center of it leaving it open. there s a day or two inbetween when it looks like it s healing but then it comes back.
