What Causes Red Blotchy Skin All Over The Body?

For the past 6 months or so I've been suffering from red blotchy itchy skin all over my body??---my doctor said it's dry skin and to use baby lotion which doesn't help. The itchyness is very irritating--what are the possible causes and what can I do about it?? Thank you.
